This webinar will examine the components of the technical requirements for classifying a financial asset. Practical illustrations on various form of investment in financial assets such as equity instruments, debt instruments, unit trust, structured products, life assurance contracts and so on, will be used to provide a clear understanding on the principles of financial asset classification. Furthermore, the presenter will be introducing a practical methodology and a tabulation format to enhance your skill in classifying financial assets.

  • Determining contractual cash flows
  • Identifying contractual cash flows that is solely payment of principal and interest based on interest outstanding
  • Determining what contractual terms consists of basic lending features
  • Various forms of contractual cash flows will be examined by illustrative examples
  • In determining business models, management is required to decide whether a portfolio of financial asset is held:
    • with the objective of collecting contractual cash flows only or
    • with the objective of collecting contractual cash flows and for selling
  • Level and grouping of business models within an entity
  • The three measurement models: amortised cost, fair value through profit or loss and fair value through other comprehensive income
  • How to apply the option to designate financial assets at fair value through profit or loss
  • Understanding the procedures for subsequent reclassification

In the last 25 years he is a partner of a consulting firm providing technical training and consultancy in financial reporting topics. His clients’ profiles include multinational companies, governments, regulators and professional institutions, auditors and lawyers. Danny held several honorary advisory roles in financial reporting committees and working group in IFRS technical issues. He is currently a project manager with the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board.
