Modern data exploration and visualization platforms, such as Tableau, offer users new ways to discover new business perspectives with significant impact. Tableau is a flexible platform for analyzing data and identifying more valuable information and has been recognized as one of the leaders for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platform in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for many consecutive years.

In an ever-changing world, it is crucial that our decisions be based on relevant, real, and accurate information. Tableau can connect, analyze, and visualize data very efficiently, which will enable any finance and accounting professionals to perform more powerful data analytics in almost real time.

This hands-on workshop is a practical introduction to Tableau and will help you to develop the basic skills to start analyzing, visualizing data, and creating dashboards using Tableau Desktop. After completing this highly engaging workshop, you will be able to connect, combine, and transform source data, design and create dashboards in Tableau Desktop. With his valuable background in Finance, Accounting, and Tax, the Trainer will be using Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and POS data in the examples and hands-on exercises. This will facilitate learning and allow you to directly apply your knowledge learned in the workplace.

  • Be able to connect, combine, and transform source data
  • Be able to design and create dashboards in Tableau Desktop
  • Be able to change the data source and refresh the results in Tableau Desktop

Module 2: Connect to source data

  • Navigating Tableau
  • How do I connect to an Excel workbook?
  • How do I connect to a CSV file?
  • How do I connect to a PDF file?
  • How do I format data?
  • Dealing with unstructured data

Module 3: Organize and enrich data

  • Understanding data modeling
  • What is joining data?
  • What is blending data?
  • What are calculated fields?
  • Understanding functions

Module 4: Analyze and visualize data

  • How do I create charts
  • Understanding different chart types
  • How do I create a dashboard?
  • How do I use filters and highlight?

Module 5: Fine tuning your dashboard

  • How do I use filters?
  • How do I highlight data?
  • How do I use parameters?

This workshop qualifies for 7.0 CPE hours in Information Technology (Category 5).

Laptop Requirements

  • You are required to bring along an internet-enabled laptop.
  • Your laptop should be installed with Tableau Desktop.
  • If you are not a subscribed user, you can download a free trial version (good for 14 days) as follows:
  1. Go to the official Tableau webpage (https://www.tableau.com/products/desktop/download) and click “DOWNLOAD FREE TRIAL” button to start the download process.
  2. Once download is complete, run the installation file.
  3. When you open Tableau Desktop, you are going to see the following pop-up. You can click “Start trial now”. Please note you can use Tableau Desktop only for 14 days. After 14 days, your trial license will expire.

Expert Speaker

John Kim

John is a US Certified Public Accountant licensed in New York State. He leads the business intelligence service practice of A Tax Advisor Pte Ltd, and provides a variety of solutions (e.g., technology and data strategy, data transformation and integration, process improvement and automation, and data analytics services) and business process outsourcing services to corporate finance and tax departments.

John utilizes over fifteen years of combined experience in corporate financial reporting and analysis, corporate tax compliance and provision, executive financial dashboard management, technology and performance improvement, data modeling and warehousing, and ERP integration to assist corporate finance and tax functions with improving performance and managing business risk using business intelligence.

Before joining A Tax Advisor Pte Ltd, John was part of EY’s Tax Technology and Transformation group (formerly known as Tax Performance Advisory) in Washington, New York City and Singapore.

Prior to joining EY, John was a financial analyst in charge of the development of Business Objects tools, data modeling and warehousing, and executive financial dashboard management for a global manufacturing company in the United States.
